Light bulbs are an integral part of a house. They provide artificial lighting at night. They also help in illuminating dark areas where natural light from the sun does not reach. The invention of the light bulb by Thomas Alva Edison is considered as one of the most important inventions of the 18th Century. A light bulb is also known as an incandescent lamp, due to its light emitting properties. It makes use of a thin filament, usually made of tungsten, which is known to have high resistance to heat. When electricity is passed through the filament, in the vacuum glass chamber, it heats up. Owing to its resistance properties, it emits light.

They can be fixed by screwing it into a light holder. Almost all household bulbs have a medium screw base, sometimes called an edison screw. It is 1 1-16 inches in diameter with 7 threads within each inch. The bulbs are usually shaped charcterized by their wattage. The industry defrentiates them by letters "A", which is the shape of a common household light bulb. "B" is the shape of a candelabra base, Christmas tree bulb. "C" is the shape of a miniature screw night light bulb. Similarly different patterns are identified by alphabets upto "J."
Energy efficient light bulbs are becoming increasingly common in availability and utility. In order to conserve energy, households across America and the world, are using energy efficient light bulbs. These are not very different from the usual light bulb. They do not have the tungsten used in the filament. They are credited with saving on the electricity consumption.
